BIO

Sylvia is a Founding Partner and Managing Partner at Gerivia Advocates LLP. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Commissioner for Oaths. She has considerable experience in conveyancing and real estate law, corporate commercial matters, and public procurement litigation. She is involved in research, drafting and review of documents relating to these areas and also in procurement litigation before the PPARB.

Education and Training

Sylvia holds a Master of Laws degree in International Trade and Investments Law and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

Career

Prior to joining Gerivia Advocates LLP, Sylvia was a Legal Associate at Wambugu & Muriuki Advocates and a Legal Assistant at Ogetto, Otachi & Co. Advocates (where she also undertook internship and her pupillage course).

Experience

Sylvia has experience in public procurement and asset disposal matters including drafting of procurement pleadings and representation of clients before the PPARB. She also has experience in conveyancing and commercial matters. 

In 2017 as an Associate at Wambugu & Muriuki Advocates, she worked with Mr. George Karuthui in successfully defending the cases involving Ballot Papers prior to the 2013 elections at the High Court at Nairobi and the Court of Appeal at Nairobi.

Further, Sylvia has been involved in handling various public procurement and asset disposal matters from 2016 to date, including drafting of request for reviews and various memorandum of responses and attending hearings and other proceedings before the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board.

From 2016 to date she has been continuously involved in perfection of securities and takeover of securities transactions in favour of various banks in Kenya.

Additionally, she has handled conveyancing and real estate matters which entail negotiating and offering legal advisory services in sale and purchase of properties including due diligence on property and real estate matters, drafting of conveyances, leases, licenses, agreements to lease and securities. Overseeing registration of leases, transfers, and other security documentation.

In January 2015 – September 2015, Sylvia was seconded to Safaricom Limited as external counsel (representing Ogetto, Otachi & Co. Advocates), where she was tasked with preparation and overseeing of registration of leases, interim agreements, agreements to lease and licenses.

Sylvia was a Legal Intern (2013-2014) in the case of Prosecutor vs Uhuru Kenyatta (ICC), she worked under the supervision of investigation counsel Mr. Kennedy Ogetto (currently Solicitor General) and was tasked with assisting in witness interviews recording statements, and transcribing witness statements as part of a team.

Sylvia is passionate about indoor board games, and has a collection of such board games. This passion has been developed over the years from the time her father taught her and her siblings how to play “Ludo”. For her, there’s nothing quite like a Friday indoors game night, complete with competitive spirits, laughter and occasional tears (for the sore losers).
